For various reasons, increasing numbers of people are embracing the principles of ‘self-care’ or ‘self-treatment’ as part of their lifestyle.
There are two basic concepts of ‘self-care’.
- 1. Self-care for the chronically ill, following medical instruction.
- Examples of this group would be the home management of serious cases of diabetes or asthma, where the patient controls the administration of their own medication and other procedures. This form of ‘self-care’ avoids regular and costly medical and nursing care, and actually results in better health outcomes anyway.
- 2. Self-care through personal choice.
- This group is made-up of individuals who have made a considered decision to assume ownership and responsibility for their lives. This usually amounts to adopting healthier eating habits, exercising more regularly, lowering their level of stress, downsizing their dependence on material things and taking natural health supplements. They are people who believe that their ‘quality of life’ is enhanced through self-care. They believe in ‘prevention through self-care’.
The Active Elements® system of assessment and rebalancing has something to offer each group.
Whether sick or well, embracing self-care doesn’t mean turning our back on medical help in an emergency and being totally irresponsible with our own life, or that of others. Self-care actually amounts to assuming greater personal responsibility for health outcomes, by taking ownership of our health back from Government and Medicine. It also confers some control over our ‘quality of life’, while having the added advantage of lessening the crippling financial burden for the community. For both individuals and the community, it’s a win-win situation.
Great human and financial benefit to the community stems from those in society who choose to practise ‘prevention through self-care’. There is enough known right now to lower the incidence of the major diseases that afflict modern western society, if individuals would assume greater responsibility for their lifestyle.
